How to connect Google Search Console to ChatGPT
Connect Google Search Console to ChatGPT using a custom MCP app where supported. See access requirements, setup steps and practical SEO prompts.
ChatGPT can use custom remote MCP apps in supported configurations. Check your plan and workspace permissions, create or enable an app pointing at the GSC Magic endpoint, authorize it, then test with a read-only Search Console request. These controls are not available on every plan.
Can ChatGPT read Google Search Console?
ChatGPT can explain SEO without any connector, but it does not automatically have access to the private data in your Google Search Console account. To ask questions about your actual clicks, search queries and indexed URLs, you need an approved connection that exposes that data to ChatGPT.
A remote MCP app is one way to provide that connection. GSC Magic is being built as an MCP bridge between search data and AI tools; it does not replace Google’s underlying reports or your Google account permissions.
Before setup, read OpenAI’s current developer-mode and MCP documentation. App creation and MCP capabilities vary by plan, workspace policy and rollout. You should not assume that every personal ChatGPT account has an identical custom-app screen.
What you need
- A Google Search Console property with a Google account that can access it.
- A ChatGPT plan or workspace that permits the relevant custom MCP app.
- Permission to add or use the app (managed workspaces may require administrator approval).
- Access to the remote service you’re connecting.
If GSC Magic is not yet open to your account, join the waitlist for availability updates rather than attempting to connect to an unprovisioned service.
Add a custom MCP app in ChatGPT
The exact names differ between personal and managed accounts. The general flow is:
- Open Settings → Apps or your workspace’s Apps administration area.
- If available to you, enable Developer mode and choose Create for a custom app.
- Supply the remote MCP endpoint https://gscmagic.com/mcp, along with any required app metadata.
- Complete the authentication or tool scan requested by ChatGPT. Review access scopes before authorizing your Google account.
- Enable the created app for the conversation in which you want to work.
- Ask for a short read-only query first: list available Search Console properties.
If you cannot find an option to create the app, this may be a plan limitation, a workspace policy or a rollout difference. It is not a reason to share your Google password or an API token in chat.
Your first useful SEO analysis
List my accessible Search Console properties, then ask me which property to analyze.
Compare Google Search clicks, impressions and CTR over the last 28 complete days with the preceding 28 days. Break down losses by landing page.
Show non-branded queries with at least 100 impressions that rank between positions 4 and 15. Include page URLs, CTR and the date range.
Follow up with: “Which five actions are supported by the data, which are hypotheses, and how would we measure results?”
That distinction matters. An assistant can calculate click loss from reported data, but it should not claim that an algorithm update, a title change or an internal link caused the change without additional evidence.
Example: identify pages worth refreshing
Assume an article has 8,000 impressions, 160 clicks and an average position of 8.2 over the last 28 days (illustrative numbers). Its CTR is 2%.
A useful analysis asks:
- Which specific queries generate those impressions?
- Does the page serve the search intent behind those queries?
- Has its average position improved, worsened or stayed flat?
- Is there another URL from your site ranking for the same query?
- What is the right change to test: title, introduction, content coverage or internal links?
Changing the title based only on sitewide CTR is premature. Query intent, device, search appearance and position all influence CTR. Our low-CTR Search Console guide walks through the process.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely next step |
|---|---|
| Custom app option is missing | Check OpenAI’s plan and workspace documentation. |
| Authentication fails | Check whether the remote MCP server is live and configured for supported sign-in. |
| No Search Console sites returned | Confirm the connected Google account has access to the desired property. |
| Numbers do not match GA4 sessions | These measure different events; read why GSC and GA4 differ. |
| Tool output is too broad | Specify one property, one search type and a complete date range. |
If you cannot create a custom MCP app
A missing custom-app option is not something to work around by entering credentials into a prompt. At the time of writing, OpenAI’s developer mode guide describes organizational permissions, rollout limitations and capabilities that differ by plan.
You still have useful options:
| Situation | Practical approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Your ChatGPT workspace supports custom MCP apps | Add and authorize the approved GSC Magic MCP connection when service access is available | Fast conversational queries; subject to workspace permissions. |
| Your plan has no custom-app creation controls | Export a limited, non-sensitive CSV from Search Console and analyze it in ChatGPT | Manual and not automatically refreshed. |
| You are building an internal SEO tool | Use Google’s documented Search Console API with OAuth, then expose narrowly scoped reports | More implementation and ongoing maintenance. |
| Your organization blocks third-party apps | Ask an administrator to review the integration and required data access | Approval can take time; do not bypass policy. |
The important difference is live tool access versus a static snapshot. If you upload a report generated two weeks ago, the assistant cannot reliably say what changed yesterday.
Verify the data source before trusting the answer
After an app has been approved and connected, test it with a request that can be checked against the Search Console interface.
- Ask for the list of accessible properties, not a fabricated example.
- Select one property and request the last 28 complete days of Google Web search data.
- Ask for the raw clicks and impressions and the exact start and end date.
- Open the same property and date window in Search Console. Check whether the totals are broadly consistent.
- Ask for a single page’s top five queries and verify a subset in the Pages → Queries view.
- If numbers differ, check search type, dimensions, property scope, aggregation and whether recent days are final.
As an illustrative example, an answer might say: “The blog had 1,260 clicks and 52,000 impressions in the selected complete period; CTR was 2.42%.” Those figures are not from your site. A connected assistant should only report actual values when it has received them from the relevant service.
Tell me which MCP app and tools you used, which Search Console property you queried, and the exact reporting dates. If you did not use a tool, say so.
For the selected property, return the actual clicks and impressions for Google Web search in the last complete 28-day window. Show the date range before interpreting the metrics.
Break down the biggest loss by query and device. Do not invent keyword positions or traffic changes when no result was returned.
Make reports actionable instead of generic
A useful SEO answer should separate four things:
- Observation: “Clicks decreased by 18%, mostly on three blog posts.”
- Supporting data: dates, URLs and the corresponding before-and-after values.
- Hypothesis: “The posts may no longer fully satisfy the dominant search intent.”
- Verification: “Review the changed queries, rankings and competing results before editing.”
Do not ask ChatGPT to produce 100 recommendations when only three pages account for almost all of the lost clicks. Request a prioritized shortlist, implement improvements one at a time, and compare the next complete reporting window.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Google account connection enough?
No. Signing into ChatGPT with Google does not automatically grant an app access to your Search Console property. The integration must be separately authorized for the relevant data and permissions.
Is Search Console data instant?
No. Performance data is reported with a delay and may be provisional for recent dates. Use complete time windows for meaningful comparisons.
Can the AI see a competitor’s private Search Console data?
No. Search Console property data is subject to Google account permissions. Publicly visible search results are not the same as a competitor’s private GSC reports.
Can ChatGPT combine Search Console and GA4?
Only when the available integrations expose both datasets with the required access. Otherwise, ask it to identify exactly what is missing rather than guess at conversions.
When should you connect a second data source?
Search Console tells you what happened before the click: queries, impressions, clicks and search position. GA4 helps explain what visitors did after the click: sessions, engagement and key events.
