Search Console regex generator

In short

Pick what you want to match, add your terms, and copy a regular expression for the Search Console Performance report (Queries or Pages → Custom (regex)). The expression uses only RE2 syntax, which is what Search Console supports, and you can test it on sample values before you paste it.

Regex for Search Console

You can edit the expression; the test updates as you type.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

    How it works

    RE2 syntax, partial match

Search Console uses Google's RE2 syntax and matches anywhere in the query or URL unless you anchor the expression with ^ (start) or $ (end). RE2 has no lookahead, lookbehind or backreferences, so the generator never uses them.

    Not case-sensitive by default

Search Console ignores case unless the expression starts with (?-i). Tick Case-sensitive to add it; this matters mostly for URLs with capital letters.

    Special characters are escaped

Dots, question marks, plus signs and other symbols in your terms are escaped, so "example.com" matches the literal text, not "example" followed by any character.

Do it for every page with GSC Magic

Regex filters answer one question at a time in the interface. With GSC Magic connected, your AI agent can run the same filters through the Search Console API for every site and period, and compare the results.

Split last month's clicks into brand and non-brand queries, using these brand terms: [terms].

List question queries (how, what, why) with high impressions where we rank below position 10.

    Questions

How do I filter out brand queries in Search Console?

Choose Contains any of these terms, add your brand name and its common misspellings, copy the regex, and in the Queries filter pick Custom (regex) with Doesn't match regex. What remains is non-brand search.

Why doesn't my regex with (?=…) work in Search Console?

Lookahead is not part of RE2, the syntax Search Console uses. Rewrite the condition with alternatives (|) or two separate filters.

How do I find question queries?

Pick Question queries. The default list is English question words; replace it with the words your audience uses, for example jak, co and dlaczego for Polish.

    Is there a length limit?

Very long expressions are hard to maintain and Search Console may refuse them. If a list of terms grows into the hundreds, split it into several filters or let an AI agent run the filter through the API.
