Google Search Console, Bing and GA4 in VS Code

VS Code with GitHub Copilot in agent mode can call MCP servers listed in .vscode/mcp.json. Connect GSC Magic with an access token.

Add an "http" server entry for https://mcp.gscmagic.com/mcp with an Authorization: Bearer header to .vscode/mcp.json, start it from the MCP panel, and GitHub Copilot in agent mode can call Search Console, Bing and GA4 tools.

Set up in 3 steps

  1. Create a GSC Magic account, connect Google, then create an access token under Connect → Tokens.
  2. Add the snippet below to .vscode/mcp.json in the workspace or to your user settings.
  3. Start the server from the MCP panel and switch Copilot Chat to agent mode.

Good to know

  • Everything is read-only unless you turn on write mode on a paid plan, so your agent can look but not change your site.
  • The Free plan allows 200 tool calls a month and 10 a day for one site. Pro removes the limits and stores 16 months of history.

What to ask once connected

  • "List my Search Console properties and the one with the most clicks last 28 days."
  • "Which queries sit in positions 4–10 with the most impressions? Suggest title changes."
  • "Compare clicks this month with last month by page and tell me what moved."
  • "Which URLs in my sitemap are not indexed, and what does the inspection say?"
  • "How many sessions came from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude last month, and to which pages?"

Troubleshooting

Copilot Chat does not show the tools.

Switch the chat to Agent mode and check the tools picker; Ask and Edit modes do not call MCP tools. Start the server from the MCP: Servers view if it is stopped.

The server starts but calls fail with 401.

Recreate the access token in the dashboard and update the header. Tokens can expire; the dashboard shows the date.

Prompted for an input variable instead of a token.

If you used an input placeholder for the token, VS Code asks once per session. Paste the gsm_ token when prompted or store it as a literal in user settings.

Questions about VS Code

Can the whole team share one token?

Better not. Each person should create their own token so you can revoke access individually and see who called what in the activity log.
